The use of oral contraceptives by a 25-year-old woman with a history of cerbral arterial occlusion (treated with Marcumar) is discussed. In the author's opinion, previous arterial occlusive disease (particularly in the absence of risk factors and in a young patient) is a contraindication to oral contraception. Under anticoagulant therapy, an IUD may also be contraindicated because of the danger of hemorrhage. Chemical contraception, condoms, basal temperature rhythm method, or sterilization may be possibilities for this patient.
