phenoxybenzamine and Heart Failure

phenoxybenzamine has been researched along with Heart Failure in 14 studies

Phenoxybenzamine: An alpha-adrenergic antagonist with long duration of action. It has been used to treat hypertension and as a peripheral vasodilator.

Heart Failure: A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"The clinical signs of congestive heart failure resolved rapidly on treatment with captopril and myocardial performance became normal within two weeks of medical treatment with captopril for one week and with captopril in combination with phenoxybenzamine for another week."5.28Rapid reversal of heart failure in a patient with phaeochromocytoma and catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy who was treated with captopril. ( Ritz, R; Salathe, M; Weiss, P, 1992)
" However, there are both clinical data and theoretic reasons to anticipate that some degree of tolerance may develop during the long-term use of most agents."2.36Mechanisms and implications of vasodilator tolerance in the treatment of congestive heart failure.
