phenobarbital and Liver Cirrhosis, Alcoholic

phenobarbital has been researched along with Liver Cirrhosis, Alcoholic in 4 studies

Phenobarbital: A barbituric acid derivative that acts as a nonselective central nervous system depressant. It potentiates GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID action on GABA-A RECEPTORS, and modulates chloride currents through receptor channels. It also inhibits glutamate induced depolarizations.
phenobarbital : A member of the class of barbiturates, the structure of which is that of barbituric acid substituted at C-5 by ethyl and phenyl groups.

Liver Cirrhosis, Alcoholic: FIBROSIS of the hepatic parenchyma due to chronic excess ALCOHOL DRINKING.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
" The histological changes associated with the therapy were investigated by comparing liver biopsies before and after phenobarbital and medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment, known inducers of hepatic microsomal enzyme system, in eight alcoholics with cirrhosis and two control groups, subjects with normal liver and endstage alcoholic cirrhosis."3.66Pericellular collagen in alcoholics with liver cirrhosis. ( Arranto, AJ; Rautio, A; Sotaniemi, EA, 1982)
" Hepatic microsomal reserve, defined as the difference between the basal and phenobarbital-stimulated ABT, was therefore studied in eight healthy control subjects and 12 patients with stable alcoholic cirrhosis."3.66Decreased hepatic microsomal reserve in patients with cirrhosis. Studies using aminopyrine as model drug. ( Hepner, GW; Piken, E, 1979)
