pentamidine and Electrocardiogram QT Prolonged

pentamidine has been researched along with Electrocardiogram QT Prolonged in 6 studies

Pentamidine: Antiprotozoal agent effective in trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and some fungal infections; used in treatment of PNEUMOCYSTIS pneumonia in HIV-infected patients. It may cause diabetes mellitus, central nervous system damage, and other toxic effects.
pentamidine : A diether consisting of pentane-1,5-diol in which both hydroxyl hydrogens have been replaced by 4-amidinophenyl groups. A trypanocidal drug that is used for treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis and Chagas disease.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"Pentamidine is an antiprotozoal compound that clinically causes acquired long QT syndrome (acLQTS), which is associated with prolonged QT intervals, tachycardias, and sudden cardiac arrest."3.78Molecular determinants of pentamidine-induced hERG trafficking inhibition. ( Dennis, AT; Deschenes, I; Ficker, E; Nassal, D; Wan, H; Wang, L, 2012)
" Taken together, our data imply that chronic administration of pentamidine at clinically relevant exposure reduces the membrane expression of the hERG channel, which may most likely be the major mechanism of QT prolongation and torsade de pointes reported in man."1.33Pentamidine reduces hERG expression to prolong the QT interval. ( Bradley, JA; Chen, X; Cordes, JS; Lloyd, DB; Opsahl, AC; Sun, Z; Tengowski, MW; Zhou, J, 2005)
