Preparation of pectin-chitosan hydrogels based on bioadhesive-design micelle to prompt bacterial infection wound healing.
The aim of this study was to design a pectin-chitosan (PEC-CS) hydrogel loaded with a bioadhesive-design micelle containing large amount of ciprofloxacin for antibacterial and healing wound applications. Pectin and chitosan are crosslinked in a safe and convenient way, and the PEC-CS hydrogel have high water content (>95 %), strong water absorption (15,000 %), good water retention (>10,000 % at 30 % RH for 12 h), and the PEC-CS hydrogels showed no cytotoxicity and hemolysis, thus providing a humid microenvironment suitable for wound. Additionally, the dopamine modified carrier can greatly improve the solubility and retention time in the wound of ciprofloxacin, effectively increase the efficiency of drug loading into the PEC-CS hydrogels and exert antibacterial activity in the wound for a long time. In vitro and in vivo pharmacodynamics experiments have shown that PEC-CS#CIP@DPDMCs hydrogels can resist bacteria and promote wound healing. Thus,The PEC-CS#CIP@DPDMCs hydrogels can be a potential anti-infective hydrogel excipient. Novel banana peel pectin mediated green route for the synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles and their spectral characterization.
Hydroxyapatite [HAP, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] is the main inorganic component of natural bone and is widely used in various biomedical applications. In this paper, we have reported the synthesis of HAP nanoparticles by banana peel pectin mediated green template method. The pectin extracted from the peels of banana and its various concentrations were exploited in our study to achieve a controlled crystallinity, particle size as well as uniform morphology of HAP. The extracted pectin was characterized by spectral techniques like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) for the functional group analysis, proton-1 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H NMR) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((13)C NMR) for the identification of H and C atoms in the extracted pectin, respectively. The HAP nanoparticles were synthesized using different concentrations of the as-extracted pectin. The purity, crystallinity and morphology of the as-synthesized HAP nanoparticles were evaluated by FTIR, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Moreover the antibacterial activity of HAP nanoparticles was evaluated against the gram positive and negative bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), respectively. The experimental results revealed that the HAP nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of an optimized concentration of pectin are pure, low crystalline, spherical and discrete particles with reduced size. Also, the HAP sample derived in the presence of pectin showed an enhanced antibacterial activity than that of the HAP synthesized in the absence of pectin. Hence, the HAP nanoparticles synthesized using pectin as a green template can act as a good biomaterial for biomedical applications. Composition and properties of biologically active pectic polysaccharides from leek (Allium porrum).
Leek (Allium porrum) is very commonly used vegetable in Bulgaria and is distinctive with high content of bioactive components. Previously we obtained five crude pectic polysaccharides from leek through consecutive extraction. Some of them appeared to be good stimulators of the immune system. Schols and Voragen investigated the composition of modified hairy regions of pectic polysaccharides isolated from leek cell walls. Samuelson et al. identified the polysaccharide structures encountered in hairy regions as bioactive. The aim of this work was to study the isolation, composition and biological activities of pectic polysaccharides from leek.. Two pectic polysaccharides from leek were isolated through consecutive water and acid extraction. The water extractable pectin had higher polyuronic content, higher protein content and lower neutral sugar content. It was found that next to galacturonic acid they also contain glucuronic acid in ratio 9:1 for the water- and 3:1 for the acid-extractable polysaccharide. The main neutral sugar was galactose. The water-extractable pectic polysaccharide had higher molecular weight (10(6) Da) and homogeneity. It was shown that the pectic polysaccharides from leek have considerable immunostimulating activities.. Leek polysaccharides have relatively high galacturonic and glucuronic acid content and are distinguished with high biological activity. [Role of pectins in the complex treatment in patients in neurointensive care units].
Clinical and laboratory estimation of the efficacy of pectins in complex treatment of patients with intracranial hematoma was performed. It was shown that in the group of the patients treated with pectins vs the control group development of pyo-inflammatory infections was less frequent, the indices of the immunity status improved and a more rapid decrease of the intoxication and a more rapid normalization of the composition of various biotopes in the patients were observed.
