palmitic acid and Adrenoleukodystrophy

palmitic acid has been researched along with Adrenoleukodystrophy in 8 studies

Palmitic Acid: A common saturated fatty acid found in fats and waxes including olive oil, palm oil, and body lipids.
hexadecanoic acid : A straight-chain, sixteen-carbon, saturated long-chain fatty acid.

Adrenoleukodystrophy: An X-linked recessive disorder characterized by the accumulation of saturated very long chain fatty acids in the LYSOSOMES of ADRENAL CORTEX and the white matter of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. This disease occurs almost exclusively in the males. Clinical features include the childhood onset of ATAXIA; NEUROBEHAVIORAL MANIFESTATIONS; HYPERPIGMENTATION; ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY; SEIZURES; MUSCLE SPASTICITY; and DEMENTIA. The slowly progressive adult form is called adrenomyeloneuropathy. The defective gene ABCD1 is located at Xq28, and encodes the adrenoleukodystrophy protein (ATP-BINDING CASSETTE TRANSPORTERS).

Research Excerpts

" Although plasma very-long-chain fatty acid profile suggested X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, marked reduction in fibroblast lignoceric acid oxidation and the presence of cytosolic catalase were consistent with Zellweger syndrome (ZS)."3.69Late-onset generalized disorder of peroxisomes. "Very long chain fatty acids (lignoceric acid) are oxidized in peroxisomes and pathognomonic amounts of these fatty acids accumulate in X-adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) due to a defect in their oxidation."3.67Adrenoleukodystrophy: impaired oxidation of fatty acids due to peroxisomal lignoceroyl-CoA ligase deficiency.
