[Serum oxytocin and oxytocinase activities in women during pregnancy].
    Akusherstvo i ginekologiia, 1991, Issue:4

Serum oxytocic and oxytocinase activities were examined in 50 females with normal pregnancy and 50 with threatened abortion by using biological (oxytocin) and biochemical (oxytocinase) methods. The findings suggest that there is no regular changes in serum oxytocic activity in the course of pregnancy, whereas its oxytocinase activity significantly increases with pregnancy development. The females with threatened abortion showed the same values of serum oxytocic activity as those with normal pregnancy, but much lower oxytocinase activity. The assay of serum oxytocinase activity may be of diagnostic value when threatened abortion is suspected.

Epidural analgesia in midtrimester abortion.
International journal of gynaecology and obstetrics: the official organ of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, 1976, Volume: 14, Issue:3

Epidural analgesia was performed in 78 women with abortion in the midtrimester or pre-term delivery of up to 27 weeks of pregnancy. The patients were divided into three groups. The first group included thirty women with signs of inevitable abortion. The second group comprised of 9 cases of induced abortion and the third one of 39 cases of pre-term delivery. The three groups were statistically evaluated in relation to time of abortion or labor, fetal weight, weeks of pregnancy, parity and patient's age and were consequently compared with 90 women divided into three similar control groups. The effect of the epidural analgesia was satisfactory in all cases in the three experimental groups, and no complications or side-effects were observed. The advantages of the use of epidural analgesia were the diminished psychological reaction to the abortion, the possibility to perform surgical procedures without any additional anesthesia and the reduction in the duration of the abortion or labor. These advantages justified in our opinion the use of the procedure.

The relaxing effect of terbutaline on the human uterus during term labor.
American journal of obstetrics and gynecology, 1975, Mar-01, Volume: 121, Issue:5

The uterine and cardiovascular responses to the adrenergic beta2-receptor stimulator terbutaline (TRB) were investigated in 14 patients in normal term labor. TRB, administered intravenously at a rate of 10 to 20 mug per minute, effectively inhibited uterine activity in advanced labor and also expulsion. Intravenous injection of TRB, 250 mug, diminished oxytocin-induced uterine hyperactivity. No serious side effects of the drug were observed; the circulatory effects were minimal, except for a tolerable maternal tachycardia. The mode of action and clinical application of TRB for inhibition of unwanted uterine activity are discussed.
