orotic acid and Choline Deficiency

orotic acid has been researched along with Choline Deficiency in 9 studies

Orotic Acid: An intermediate product in PYRIMIDINE synthesis which plays a role in chemical conversions between DIHYDROFOLATE and TETRAHYDROFOLATE.
orotic acid : A pyrimidinemonocarboxylic acid that is uracil bearing a carboxy substituent at position C-6.

Choline Deficiency: A condition produced by a deficiency of CHOLINE in animals. Choline is known as a lipotropic agent because it has been shown to promote the transport of excess fat from the liver under certain conditions in laboratory animals. Combined deficiency of choline (included in the B vitamin complex) and all other methyl group donors causes liver cirrhosis in some animals. Unlike compounds normally considered as vitamins, choline does not serve as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions. (From Saunders Dictionary & Encyclopedia of Laboratory Medicine and Technology, 1984)

Research Excerpts

"The activities of pathways for the biosynthesis of hippurate, urea and pyrimidines in hepatocytes isolated from lean livers were compared with those from three sources of fatty liver: a) the genetically obese Zucker rat, b) Sprague-Dawley rats fed a diet deficient in choline and inositol, and c) Sprague-Dawley rats fed a diet supplemented with orotic acid."7.67Biosynthesis of hippurate, urea and pyrimidines in the fatty liver: studies with rats fed orotic acid or a diet deficient in choline and inositol, and with genetically obese (Zucker) rats. ( Maswoswe, SM; Tremblay, GC, 1989)
" However, when females and males were exposed to four promotion regimens including orotic acid (OA), choline deficiency, deoxycholic acid (DOC), or selection for resistance (to 2-acetylaminofluorene; 2-AAF) after DEN initiation, very significant sex differences were observed with respect to oval cell proliferation and growth rates of hepatocytic foci."3.68Sex differences in response to four promotion regimens in spite of common first cellular steps in the hepatocellular cancer process initiated by diethylnitrosamine.
