nitrous oxide and Heart Arrest

nitrous oxide has been researched along with Heart Arrest in 38 studies

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrogen oxide (N2O). A colorless, odorless gas that is used as an anesthetic and analgesic. High concentrations cause a narcotic effect and may replace oxygen, causing death by asphyxia. It is also used as a food aerosol in the preparation of whipping cream.
dinitrogen oxide : A nitrogen oxide consisting of linear unsymmetrical molecules with formula N2O. While it is the most used gaseous anaesthetic in the world, its major commercial use, due to its solubility under pressure in vegetable fats combined with its non-toxicity in low concentrations, is as an aerosol spray propellant and aerating agent for canisters of 'whipped' cream.

Heart Arrest: Cessation of heart beat or MYOCARDIAL CONTRACTION. If it is treated within a few minutes, heart arrest can be reversed in most cases to normal cardiac rhythm and effective circulation.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"One hundred percent CO2-induced cardiac arrest occurred in 119 seconds and was not oxygen-dependent, whereas 100% N2O induced cardiac arrest occurred in 390 seconds and was clearly dependent on hypoxemia."1.31Cardiac arrest induced by accidental inhalation of anoxic gases, is the cause always a lack of oxygen? ( Jawan, B; Lee, JH, 2000)
"Bupivacaine was infused at a constant rate while the pigs' ECGs and EEGs were recorded."1.28Bupivacaine toxicity in young pigs is age-dependent and is affected by volatile anesthetics. ( Badgwell, JM; Heavner, JE; Kytta, J, 1990)
"1."1.26[Anesthesia in pacemaker implantation. Experiences in 935 cases of anesthesia for the implantation or revision of a cardiac pacemaker]. ( Blaum, U; Pflüger, H; Schmidt, H, 1977)
"A case of cardiac arrest is presented which was caused by improper connection of a modified Mapleson D circuit (Bain breathing circuit)."1.25A hazard associated with improper connection of the Bain breathing circuit. ( Paterson, JG; Vanhooydonk, V, 1975)
