nitrites has been researched along with Urinary Tract Infections in 163 studies
Nitrites: Salts of nitrous acid or compounds containing the group NO2-. The inorganic nitrites of the type MNO2 (where M=metal) are all insoluble, except the alkali nitrites. The organic nitrites may be isomeric, but not identical with the corresponding nitro compounds. (Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed)
Urinary Tract Infections: Inflammatory responses of the epithelium of the URINARY TRACT to microbial invasions. They are often bacterial infections with associated BACTERIURIA and PYURIA.

" Selected publications should be concerned with the diagnosis of bacteriuria or urinary tract infections, investigate the use of dipstick tests for nitrites and/or leukocyte esterase, and present empirical data." | 4.82 | The urine dipstick test useful to rule out infections. A meta-analysis of the accuracy. ( Bezemer, PD; Bouter, LM; Devillé, WL; van der Windt, DA; van Duijn, NP; Yzermans, JC, 2004) |
"To further define the endogenous sources of urine nitrite in urinary tract infections, we measured urinary nitrite levels by the Griess method and assayed urinary nitric oxide (NO) synthase activity by the conversion of 14C-arginine to 14C-citrulline." | 3.69 | Nitric oxide synthase: an endogenous source of elevated nitrite in infected urine. ( Smith, SD; Weiss, RM; Wheeler, MA, 1994) |
"Urine dipstick testing for nitrites identified half of all patients with urinary tract infections and was superior to urinalysis on follow-up visits." | 3.68 | A study of various tests to detect asymptomatic urinary tract infections in an obstetric population. ( Bachman, JW; Heise, RH; Naessens, JM; Timmerman, MG, 1993) |
"Asymptomatic bacteriuria is often unnecessarily treated in older patients." | 2.82 | Office-Based Urinalysis: A Comprehensive Review. ( Carpio, E; Greer, D; Hitzeman, N, 2022) |
"Invasive bacterial infection was defined as a positive blood or cerebrospinal fluid culture." | 1.56 | A positive nitrite test was an independent risk factor for invasive bacterial infections in infants under 90 days of age with fever without source. ( Benito, J; de la Torre, M; Gomez, B; Mintegi, S; Velasco, R, 2020) |
"Children with Kawasaki disease (KD) and pyuria have been misdiagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI)." | 1.48 | Early features of Kawasaki disease with pyuria in febrile infants younger than 6 months. ( Ahn, JG; Kim, DS; Yoon, SH, 2018) |
"Most patients with hyperbilirubinemia and a positive nitrite test in our sample did not have an associated urinary tract infection." | 1.34 | Is there a link between hyperbilirubinemia and elevated urine nitrite. ( Bryan, D; Marill, K; Watts, S, 2007) |
"Sensitivity and specificity were compared using McNemar's chi2 test for paired specimens and the ordinary chi2 test for unpaired comparisons." | 1.33 | A head-to-head comparison: "clean-void" bag versus catheter urinalysis in the diagnosis of urinary tract infection in young children. ( Kramer, MS; McGillivray, D; Mok, E; Mulrooney, E, 2005) |

"A urine sample with at least 1+ leukocytes or positive nitrites on urine dipstick test will be considered a false positive urine." (NCT04055675)
Timeframe: The urine is tested immediately, and results are available two minutes after placing the reagent strip in the urine.
