nitrates has been researched along with Smear Layer in 4 studies
Nitrates: Inorganic or organic salts and esters of nitric acid. These compounds contain the NO3- radical.
Smear Layer: Adherent debris produced when cutting the enamel or dentin in cavity preparation. It is about 1 micron thick and its composition reflects the underlying dentin, although different quantities and qualities of smear layer can be produced by the various instrumentation techniques. Its function is presumed to be protective, as it lowers dentin permeability. However, it masks the underlying dentin and interferes with attempts to bond dental material to the dentin.

"To provide a brief overview of the diagnosis, epidemiology, etiology and clinical management of dentin hypersensitivity, to discuss technical approaches to relieve sensitivity, with special emphasis on dentin tubule occlusion and the clinical evidence for efficacy of desensitizing toothpastes based upon this approach, and to summarize the science behind a new dentifrice technology, based upon arginine and calcium carbonate, and the clinical evidence which proves that it delivers both instant and lasting relief of dentin hypersensitivity." | 4.86 | Recent advances in dentin hypersensitivity: clinically proven treatments for instant and lasting sensitivity relief.
