'Leptotrichia amnionii', a newly reported cause of early onset neonatal meningitis.
    Journal of medical microbiology, 2013, Volume: 62, Issue:Pt 5

'Leptotrichia amnionii' is an underestimated fastidious inhabitant of the vaginal flora that can cause upper genital tract infections when predisposing factors are present. We describe here what is believed to be the first reported case of early onset meningitis due to 'L. amnionii' in a neonate with intrauterine growth retardation. The outcome was favourable after cefotaxime treatment.

Bacillus cereus meningitis in a term neonate.
The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians, 2009, Volume: 22, Issue:5

A case of Bacillus cereus meningitis in a term neonate without identifiable risk factors or source of the organism is presented. Prompt identification of the organism and treatment resulted in a favourable outcome.

[Kingella kingae: a rare cause of meningitis].
Archives de pediatrie : organe officiel de la Societe francaise de pediatrie, 2002, Volume: 9, Issue:1

Kingella kingae is the second most frequent germ involved in arthritis affecting young children. This germ isolation on ordinary environment is difficult, which may explain why it is seldom known. It is now widely accepted that a direct inoculate of articular and osseous samples on liquid substrate improves the culture sensitivity. Other septic localizations have been described such as endocarditis or, less commonly, meningitis.. We report the observation of a five-year-old child, treated for meningitis, with CSF culture showing evidence of scarce colonies of Kingella kingae.. By analogy with arthritis, Kingella kingae may regularly be undetected, not being isolated, in some cases of non-documented meningitis with a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology recalling a bacterial origin. It would be of interest to verify if the seeding of CSF in liquid substrate would increase the sensitiveness of the cultures.

Topics: Ceftriaxone; Cephalosporins; Cerebrospinal Fluid; Child, Preschool; Follow-Up Studies; Gentamicins; Humans; Kingella kingae; Male; Meningitis, Bacterial; Neisseriaceae Infections; Netilmicin; Time Factors

[Acute Salmonella typhi meningitis in a 25-day-old newborn infant complicated by obstruction of the sylvian artery].
Archives de pediatrie : organe officiel de la Societe francaise de pediatrie, 2000, Volume: 7, Issue:2

Acute Salmonella typhi meningitis is rare in neonates, mostly reported from developing countries with poor socioeconomic conditions.. A male Caucasian newborn presented with acute Salmonella typhi meningitis at the age of 25 days. His parents had traveled across several African countries under rudimentary hygienic conditions a few months before his birth. Despite early and adapted antibiotic therapy (cefotaxime plus netilmycine), the child developed ischemia in the region of the left sylvian artery.. Salmonella meningitis must be considered while dealing with a sick newborn whose mother has traveled across countries with endemic typhoid.

Topics: Brain Ischemia; Cefotaxime; Cephalosporins; Cerebral Arteries; Cerebral Infarction; Gentamicins; Humans; Infant, Newborn; Male; Meningitis, Bacterial; Netilmicin; Typhoid Fever

Short-term antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of wound infection and secondary meningitis in acoustic neuroma surgery: a ten-year experience in a regional hospital.
Journal of chemotherapy (Florence, Italy), 2000, Volume: 12, Issue:6

Wound infection and secondary meningitis are important complications for patients undergoing acoustic neuroma surgery. The Authors retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of a short-term protocol utilizing vancomycin and netilmicin. 434 patients underwent acoustic neuroma surgery in the Otorhinolaryngology Division, A.O. Ospedali Riuniti di Bergamo, from February 1987 to February 1997. Perioperative short-term prophylaxis was administered with vancomycin plus netilmicin. The utility of the prophylaxis schedule was evaluated on the basis of the occurrence of infectious episodes during the first 10-day follow-up. Only 2 episodes (0.5%) of bacterial meningitis were observed.

Topics: Anti-Bacterial Agents; Antibiotic Prophylaxis; Female; Gentamicins; Humans; Male; Meningitis, Bacterial; Netilmicin; Neuroma, Acoustic; Postoperative Complications; Retrospective Studies; Surgical Wound Infection; Vancomycin

[Bacterial meningitis caused by the strains of Haemophilus influenzae type B resistant to most penicillins and cephalosporins].
    Pediatria polska, 1995, Volume: 70, Issue:6

In recent years bacterial meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae appears to have occurred more frequently in Poland. In this paper the author presents three specific cases treated in one typical month at the Department of Neuroinfections at John Paul the II Hospital, Kraków. Each of the cases in question proved difficulty to treat because the strains of bacteria encountered were resistant to the most of penicilins and cephalosporins.

Topics: Anti-Bacterial Agents; Brain; Ceftazidime; Haemophilus influenzae; Humans; Infant; Male; Meningitis, Bacterial; Netilmicin
