meprobamate and Drug Withdrawal Symptoms

meprobamate has been researched along with Drug Withdrawal Symptoms in 43 studies

Meprobamate: A carbamate with hypnotic, sedative, and some muscle relaxant properties, although in therapeutic doses reduction of anxiety rather than a direct effect may be responsible for muscle relaxation. Meprobamate has been reported to have anticonvulsant actions against petit mal seizures, but not against grand mal seizures (which may be exacerbated). It is used in the treatment of ANXIETY DISORDERS, and also for the short-term management of INSOMNIA but has largely been superseded by the BENZODIAZEPINES. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p603)

Research Excerpts

"Phenazepam given to rats in a daily dose of 2 mg/kg intraperitoneally for a long (30 days) time ceased to produce the sedative effect, and discontinuation of the medication led to development of the so-called "recoil syndrome" characterized by general depression and disturbances of the conditioned-reflex activity."3.66[Experimental study of the "'rebound syndrome" following discontinuation of prolonged phenazepam administration and possibilities for preventing it]. ( Garibova, TL; Voronina, TA, 1981)
"Carisoprodol is a centrally acting muscle relaxant used in the treatment of various musculoskeletal disorders whose main metabolite, meprobamate, is a controlled substance in the United States due to its sedative properties and potential for abuse."1.36Carisoprodol withdrawal after internet purchase. ( Agrwal, N; Eleid, MF; Goodman, BP; Krahn, LE, 2010)
"Carisoprodol is a commonly used centrally acting muscle relaxant."1.34Is the frequency of carisoprodol withdrawal syndrome increasing? ( Hammer, JS; Pendarvis, RO; Reeves, RR, 2007)
" Rats were treated orally with MPB (maintenance dosage = 800 mg/kg X 2/day), PHB (100 X 2) or COD (50 X 2) twice a day (10:00 a."1.27Physical dependence on meprobamate after repeated oral administration in rats. ( Nakamura, H; Shimizu, M, 1983)
