isoflurane and Porphyria, Acute Intermittent

isoflurane has been researched along with Porphyria, Acute Intermittent in 3 studies

Isoflurane: A stable, non-explosive inhalation anesthetic, relatively free from significant side effects.

Porphyria, Acute Intermittent: An autosomal dominant porphyria that is due to a deficiency of HYDROXYMETHYLBILANE SYNTHASE in the LIVER, the third enzyme in the 8-enzyme biosynthetic pathway of HEME. Clinical features are recurrent and life-threatening neurologic disturbances, ABDOMINAL PAIN, and elevated level of AMINOLEVULINIC ACID and PORPHOBILINOGEN in the urine.

Research Excerpts

" ALA-S activity was induced by acute administration of anaesthetics (89%), veronal (240%) and ethanol (80%), while ALA-S mRNA expression augmented by chronic administration of enflurane, AIA and veronal."1.33Heme oxygenase, aminolevulinate acid synthetase and the antioxidant system in the brain of mice treated with porphyrinogenic drugs. "Despite the low incidence of the acute porphyrias, a profound knowledge of the disease is essential for anaesthesiologists, as a variety of perioperatively administered drugs are potential triggers of an acute attack."1.32[Desflurane in acute intermittent porphyria].
