homovanillic acid and Malignant Carcinoid Syndrome

homovanillic acid has been researched along with Malignant Carcinoid Syndrome in 6 studies

Homovanillic Acid: A 3-O-methyl ETHER of (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid.
homovanillate : A hydroxy monocarboxylic acid anion which is obtained by deprotonation of the carboxy group of homovanillic acid.
homovanillic acid : A monocarboxylic acid that is the 3-O-methyl ether of (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid. It is a catecholamine metabolite.

Malignant Carcinoid Syndrome: A symptom complex associated with CARCINOID TUMOR and characterized by attacks of severe flushing of the skin, diarrheal watery stools, bronchoconstriction, sudden drops in blood pressure, edema, and ascites. The carcinoid tumors are usually located in the gastrointestinal tract and metastasize to the liver. Symptoms are caused by tumor secretion of serotonin, prostaglandins, and other biologically active substances. Cardiac manifestations constitute CARCINOID HEART DISEASE. Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"The interference of various foodstuffs on methods to determine epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), metanephrines (MN), homovanillic acid (HVA), and 6-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIA) in the 24 h urine for diagnosis of pheochromocytoma and carcinoid syndrome, respectively, was investigated."3.66[The influence of different diets and smoking on the clinical chemical diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, and carcinoid syndrome (author's transl)]. ( Eberhagen, D; Heinemann, G; Rahlfs, V; Schievelbein, H, 1981)
"Although both carcinoid tumors and pheochromocytomas arise from neural crest origin, they are thought to each secrete distinctive monoamines; carcinoid tumors, which contain tryptophan hydroxylase, secrete serotonin, and pheochromocytomas, which contain tyrosine hydroxylase, may secrete dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), or epinephrine (E)."1.27Increased dopamine production in patients with carcinoid tumors. ( Feldman, JM, 1985)
