hexachlorophene and Peripheral Nervous System Diseases

hexachlorophene has been researched along with Peripheral Nervous System Diseases in 10 studies

Hexachlorophene: A chlorinated bisphenol antiseptic with a bacteriostatic action against Gram-positive organisms, but much less effective against Gram-negative organisms. It is mainly used in soaps and creams and is an ingredient of various preparations used for skin disorders. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p797)
hexachlorophene : An organochlorine compound that is diphenylmethane in which each of the phenyl groups is substituted by chlorines at positions 2, 3, and 5, and by a hydroxy group at position 6. An antiseptic that is effective against Gram-positive organisms, it is used in soaps and creams for the treatment of various skin disorders. It is also used in agriculture as an acaricide and fungicide, but is not approved for such use within the European Union.

Peripheral Nervous System Diseases: Diseases of the peripheral nerves external to the brain and spinal cord, which includes diseases of the nerve roots, ganglia, plexi, autonomic nerves, sensory nerves, and motor nerves.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
" This technique measures tissue distribution to the radioisotope, 14C-iodoantipyrine, and was used to compare NBF in sciatic nerves of rats with increased EFP induced by feeding them hexachlorophene (HCP), a neurotoxin which causes edema exclusively to the nervous system and confined to the myelin sheath."3.66Reduced nerve blood flow in hexachlorophene neuropathy: relationship to elevated endoneurial fluid pressure. ( Lampert, PW; Mizisin, AP; Myers, RR; Powell, HC, 1982)
"A technique for microgravimetric analysis of nerve edema was used to demonstrate increased water content in hexachlorophene neuropathy."3.66Microgravimetric analysis of nerve edema. ( Costello, ML; Myers, RR; Powell, HC, 1982)
