glycine and Retinal Detachment

glycine has been researched along with Retinal Detachment in 7 studies

Retinal Detachment: Separation of the inner layers of the retina (neural retina) from the pigment epithelium. Retinal detachment occurs more commonly in men than in women, in eyes with degenerative myopia, in aging and in aphakia. It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. (Dorland, 27th ed; Newell, Ophthalmology: Principles and Concepts, 7th ed, p310-12).

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"Distribution of the neurotransmitters glutamate, glycine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the metabolic amino acids aspartate and glutamine was examined immunocytochemically from 5 to 30 minutes and at 3 hours after retinal detachment in a salamander eyecup preparation."3.70Rapid glutamatergic alterations in the neural retina induced by retinal detachment. ( Sherry, DM; Townes-Anderson, E, 2000)
"Taurine levels were also increased in RRD, whereas no significant difference could be observed in glycine, aspartate and GABA levels when comparing RRD with controls."1.33Increased glutamate levels in the vitreous of patients with retinal detachment. ( Deutz, NE; Diederen, RM; Dieudonné, S; Hendrikse, F; Kessels, AG; Kijlstra, A; La Heij, EC; Liem, AT; van Eijk, HM, 2006)
"Stickler syndrome is a dominantly inherited disorder characterized by arthropathy, midline clefting, hearing loss, midfacial hypoplasia, myopia, and retinal detachment."1.31Variation in the vitreous phenotype of Stickler syndrome can be caused by different amino acid substitutions in the X position of the type II collagen Gly-X-Y triple helix.
