famotidine and Kidney Failure, Chronic

famotidine has been researched along with Kidney Failure, Chronic in 16 studies

Famotidine: A competitive histamine H2-receptor antagonist. Its main pharmacodynamic effect is the inhibition of gastric secretion.

Kidney Failure, Chronic: The end-stage of CHRONIC RENAL INSUFFICIENCY. It is characterized by the severe irreversible kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA) and the reduction in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE to less than 15 ml per min (Kidney Foundation: Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative, 2002). These patients generally require HEMODIALYSIS or KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION.

" Since famotidine is essentially free of dose-related adverse effects, dose adjustment in patients with mild renal insufficiency and in elderly people is not required; however, either a prolonged dosing interval or a decrease in daily dose during long-term therapy may be adapted for the patients with severe renal insufficiency to avoid accumulation and the potential undesirable effects."1.27Effects of age and chronic renal failure on the urinary excretion kinetics of famotidine in man.
