edrophonium and External Ophthalmoplegia

edrophonium has been researched along with External Ophthalmoplegia in 36 studies

Edrophonium: A rapid-onset, short-acting cholinesterase inhibitor used in cardiac arrhythmias and in the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis. It has also been used as an antidote to curare principles.
edrophonium : A quaternary ammonium ion that is N-ethyl-N,N-dimethylanilinium in which one of the meta positions is substituted by a hydroxy group. It is a reversible inhibitor of cholinesterase, with a rapid onset (30-60 seconds after injection) but a short duration of action (5-15 minutes). The chloride salt is used in myasthenia gravis both diagnostically and to distinguish between under- or over-treatment with other anticholinesterases. It has also been used for the reversal of neuromuscular blockade in anaesthesia, and for the management of poisoning due to tetrodotoxin, a neuromuscular blocking toxin found in puffer fish and other marine animals.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"A 70-year-old man with known vascular disease, who had bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, and an 18-month-old girl with a long-term variable esotropia culminating in a postinfectious oculopharyngeal neuropathy both responded with a positive edrophonium chloride (Tensilon) test, strongly suggesting the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis."3.66Ocular myasthenia gravis mimicking pseudointernuclear ophthalmoplegia and variable esotropia. ( Acers, TE, 1979)
"In three patients with iatrogenic diplopia, static alignment was abnormal but movement range and saccadic velocities were within normal limits."2.69Clinical evidence of extraocular muscle fiber-type specificity of botulinum toxin. ( Averbuch-Heller, L; Leigh, RJ; Remler, BF; Stahl, JS, 1998)
"A 41-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer presented with acute onset of left hypotropia and exotropia."1.30Isolated inferior rectus palsy caused by a metastasis to the oculomotor nucleus. ( Chou, TM; Demer, JL, 1998)

"The diagnosis of myasthenia gravis is usually confirmed by a Tensilon test, which can be complicated by cholinergic side effects that include cardiopulmonary arrest."1.28The sleep test for myasthenia gravis. A safe alternative to Tensilon. ( Behrens, MM; Odel, JG; Winterkorn, JM, 1991)
"Fifteen patients with ocular myasthenia gravis were examined in detail for 21 different signs, and tested for acetylcholine receptor antibodies."1.27An evaluation of signs in ocular myasthenia gravis and correlation with acetylcholine receptor antibodies.
