ebselen and Iron Overload

ebselen has been researched along with Iron Overload in 3 studies

ebselen : A benzoselenazole that is 1,2-benzoselenazol-3-one carrying an additional phenyl substituent at position 2. Acts as a mimic of glutathione peroxidase.

Iron Overload: An excessive accumulation of iron in the body due to a greater than normal absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract or from parenteral injection. This may arise from idiopathic hemochromatosis, excessive iron intake, chronic alcoholism, certain types of refractory anemia, or transfusional hemosiderosis. (From Churchill's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, 1989)

"Chronic iron overload is a major cause of cardiac failure throughout the world, but its pathogenesis remains to be clarified."1.32Ebselen decreases oxygen free radical production and iron concentrations in the hearts of chronically iron-overloaded mice. ( Bartfay, WJ; Davis, MT, 2004)
