dehydroepiandrosterone and Syphilis

dehydroepiandrosterone has been researched along with Syphilis in 2 studies

Dehydroepiandrosterone: A major C19 steroid produced by the ADRENAL CORTEX. It is also produced in small quantities in the TESTIS and the OVARY. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) can be converted to TESTOSTERONE; ANDROSTENEDIONE; ESTRADIOL; and ESTRONE. Most of DHEA is sulfated (DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE SULFATE) before secretion.
dehydroepiandrosterone : An androstanoid that is androst-5-ene substituted by a beta-hydroxy group at position 3 and an oxo group at position 17. It is a naturally occurring steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands.

Syphilis: A contagious venereal disease caused by the spirochete TREPONEMA PALLIDUM.

Research Excerpts

" Based on the finding in a prior study of high levels of cortisol (F) and subnormal levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DS) in umbilical cord serum of newborns having congenital syphilis, we sought to investigate adrenal function in adult men having syphilis and sera from 30 normal men who were pair-matched with the syphilitic men for age and time of blood sampling were compared with respect to their concentrations of DS and F and the DS to F ratio."3.68Effects of syphilis infection on adrenocortical function in men. ( Parker, CR; Schuster, MW, 1991)
" When compared with data in age- and weight-matched control infants of women having no pregnancy complications, umbilical cord serum levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, the major fetal adrenal precursor of placental estrogens, were subnormal (897 +/- 597 ng/ml, mean +/- SD) in 12 newborn infants with congenital syphilis (33."3.67The effects of syphilis on endocrine function of the fetoplacental unit.
