dehydroepiandrosterone and Metabolic Syndrome

dehydroepiandrosterone has been researched along with Metabolic Syndrome in 16 studies

Dehydroepiandrosterone: A major C19 steroid produced by the ADRENAL CORTEX. It is also produced in small quantities in the TESTIS and the OVARY. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) can be converted to TESTOSTERONE; ANDROSTENEDIONE; ESTRADIOL; and ESTRONE. Most of DHEA is sulfated (DEHYDROEPIANDROSTERONE SULFATE) before secretion.
dehydroepiandrosterone : An androstanoid that is androst-5-ene substituted by a beta-hydroxy group at position 3 and an oxo group at position 17. It is a naturally occurring steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands.

Metabolic Syndrome: A cluster of symptoms that are risk factors for CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES and TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS. The major components of metabolic syndrome include ABDOMINAL OBESITY; atherogenic DYSLIPIDEMIA; HYPERTENSION; HYPERGLYCEMIA; INSULIN RESISTANCE; a proinflammatory state; and a prothrombotic (THROMBOSIS) state.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) administration has been shown to reduce accumulation of abdominal visceral fat and protect against insulin resistance in laboratory animals, but it is not known whether DHEA decreases abdominal obesity in humans."5.11Effect of DHEA on abdominal fat and insulin action in elderly women and men: a randomized controlled trial. ( Holloszy, JO; Villareal, DT, 2004)
" Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a major circulating adrenal steroid and dietary supplement, demonstrates antiobesity, anti-inflammatory, GC-opposing and immune-modulating activity when administered to rodents."3.77A potential role for 5-androstene-3β,7β,17β-triol in obesity and metabolic syndrome. ( Ahlem, CN; Auci, DL; Frincke, JM; Kennedy, MR; Page, TM; Reading, CL, 2011)
"The aim of our study was to assess selected negative (transferrin) and positive (alpha1-antichymotrypsin [alpha1-ACT], C-reactive protein [CRP]) acute phase proteins, and to investigate associations between these proteins and serum dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels, as well as anthropometrical and biochemical indices of metabolic syndrome (MS) in men over 40 years of age."3.75Assessment of selected serum inflammatory markers of acute phase response and their correlations with adrenal androgens and metabolic syndrome in a population of men over the age of 40.
