Cyclopenta(cd)pyrene 3,4-oxide, a presumed metabolite, was found to be a direct-acting mutagen and to transform mammalian cells. These results suggest that cyclopenta(cd)pyrene 3,4-oxide may be an ultimate mutagenic form of the parent hydrocarbon.
