A fatal case of apparent water hemlock poisoning.
A 14-y-o North American native boy died 20 h after ingesting "wild carrot". He was gathering edible plants with his family on Canadian Thanksgiving. A sample of the plant he ingested couldn't be positively identified but it contained cicutoxin on chromatography. Bioassay caused death in mice which demonstrated clinical signs similar to water hemlock (Cicuta maculata) poisonings. Cicutoxin could not be demonstrated in postmortem tissue or gastric lavage. The boy's clinical signs and laboratory tests were consistent with other reported cases of this poisoning. Topics: Adolescent; Alkynes; Charcoal; Chromatography, Gas; Diynes; Fatal Outcome; Fatty Alcohols; Gastric Lavage; Hemlock; Humans; Male; Plants, Toxic; Seizures | 2001 |

Cicutoxin poisoning (water hemlock).
A 54-year-old man had a severe case of cicutoxin poisoning following the ingestion of water hemlock (Cicuta maculate). The administration of thiopentone sodium by continuous intravenous infusion proved the optimum method of controlling the gross and irregular body movements and of managing the metabolic acidosis and the cholinergic crisis characteristic of this type of poisoning. This report includes a detailed neurologic and biochemical assessment of the condition. Topics: Acidosis; Diynes; Electroencephalography; Fatty Alcohols; Humans; Male; Middle Aged; Movement Disorders; Plant Poisoning; Polyenes; Seizures; Spasm; Wechsler Scales | 1975 |
