carbamazepine and Cerebellar Ataxia

carbamazepine has been researched along with Cerebellar Ataxia in 10 studies

Carbamazepine: A dibenzazepine that acts as a sodium channel blocker. It is used as an anticonvulsant for the treatment of grand mal and psychomotor or focal SEIZURES. It may also be used in the management of BIPOLAR DISORDER, and has analgesic properties.
carbamazepine : A dibenzoazepine that is 5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine carrying a carbamoyl substituent at the azepine nitrogen, used as an anticonvulsant.

Cerebellar Ataxia: Incoordination of voluntary movements that occur as a manifestation of CEREBELLAR DISEASES. Characteristic features include a tendency for limb movements to overshoot or undershoot a target (dysmetria), a tremor that occurs during attempted movements (intention TREMOR), impaired force and rhythm of diadochokinesis (rapidly alternating movements), and GAIT ATAXIA. Research Excerpts

" Since gaze-evoked nystagmus, dizziness, and ataxia are some of the typical adverse effects (AEs) of the dose-dependent toxicity of carbamazepine, preexisting CA could possible explain in part the interindividual variation in the tolerance of high serum concentrations of carbamazepine."7.69Cerebellar atrophy decreases the threshold of carbamazepine toxicity in patients with chronic focal epilepsy. ( May, TW; Rohde, M; Schmidt, RC; Schütz, M; Specht, U; Wagner, V; Wolf, P, 1997)
" Reversible dystonia may occasionally be precipitated by phenytoin or carbamazepine; asterixis by phenytoin, barbiturates or carbamazepine; and, more commonly, tremor by valproate."4.77Adverse neuropsychiatric effects of anticonvulsant drugs. ( Reynolds, EH; Trimble, MR, 1985)
