arecoline and Affective Psychosis, Bipolar

arecoline has been researched along with Affective Psychosis, Bipolar in 4 studies

Arecoline: An alkaloid obtained from the betel nut (Areca catechu), fruit of a palm tree. It is an agonist at both muscarinic and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. It is used in the form of various salts as a ganglionic stimulant, a parasympathomimetic, and a vermifuge, especially in veterinary practice. It has been used as a euphoriant in the Pacific Islands.
arecoline : A tetrahydropyridine that is 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine with a methyl group at position 1, and a methoxycarbonyl group at position 3. An alkaloid found in the areca nut, it acts as an agonist of muscarinic acetylcholine.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"We compared central cholinergic responsiveness (using the latency to induction of rapid eye movement sleep after arecoline challenge as a response marker) in 90 subjects: patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) (n = 53), nonaffective psychiatric controls (n = 17), and normal controls (n = 20)."3.67Cholinergic REM sleep induction response correlation with endogenous major depressive subtype. ( Bell, J; Dube, S; Jackson, E; Jones, D; Kelwala, S; Sitaram, N, 1985)
" After several pilot dose-response studies, we administered 8 mg of the cholinergic agonist arecoline subcutaneously to eight pairs of normal volunteer identical twins and eight bipolar patients currently euthymic and unmedicated."1.27Behavioral, physiological, and neuroendocrine responses to arecoline in normal twins and "well state" bipolar patients. ( Gershon, ES; Gillin, JC; Jimerson, DC; Lawrence, D; Nadi, NS; Nurnberger, JI; Simmons-Alling, S; Sitaram, N; Tamminga, C, 1983)
