antipyrine and Hepatic Encephalopathy

antipyrine has been researched along with Hepatic Encephalopathy in 5 studies

Antipyrine: An analgesic and antipyretic that has been given by mouth and as ear drops. Antipyrine is often used in testing the effects of other drugs or diseases on drug-metabolizing enzymes in the liver. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p29)
antipyrine : A pyrazolone derivative that is 1,2-dihydropyrazol-3-one substituted with methyl groups at N-1 and C-5 and with a phenyl group at N-2.

Hepatic Encephalopathy: A syndrome characterized by central nervous system dysfunction in association with LIVER FAILURE, including portal-systemic shunts. Clinical features include lethargy and CONFUSION (frequently progressing to COMA); ASTERIXIS; NYSTAGMUS, PATHOLOGIC; brisk oculovestibular reflexes; decorticate and decerebrate posturing; MUSCLE SPASTICITY; and bilateral extensor plantar reflexes (see REFLEX, BABINSKI). ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY may demonstrate triphasic waves. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1117-20; Plum & Posner, Diagnosis of Stupor and Coma, 3rd ed, p222-5)

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"In 33 patients with acute hepatic encephalopathy due to toxic or viral hepatitis the following analyses were performed: (24-14C)cholic acid conjugation and sulfation, plasma phenazone clearance, galactose elimination capacity, and concentrations of glycocholic acid and glycolithocholic acid sulfate in plasma."3.66Cholic acid conjugation test and quantitative liver function in acute liver failure. ( Andreasen, PB; Bahnsen, M; Bremmelgaard, A; Christensen, E; Ranek, L, 1983)
"The hepatic microsomal metabolism of antipyrine, as measured by its metabolic clearance, was investigated in 18 patients either before, during, or after hepatic encephalopathy."3.65Liver failure and drug metabolism. ( Andreasen, PB; Ranek, L, 1975)
"Antipyrine metabolism was normal or marginally impaired in patients with compensated cirrhosis or acute hepatitis, whereas it was frequently abnormal in those with chronic active hepatitis or advanced alcoholic liver disease."1.26Drug metabolism in liver disease. Identification of patients with impaired hepatic drug metabolism. ( Cooksley, WG; Farrell, GC; Hart, P; Powell, LW, 1978)
