amitriptyline and Cognition Disorders

amitriptyline has been researched along with Cognition Disorders in 18 studies

Amitriptyline: Tricyclic antidepressant with anticholinergic and sedative properties. It appears to prevent the re-uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin at nerve terminals, thus potentiating the action of these neurotransmitters. Amitriptyline also appears to antagonize cholinergic and alpha-1 adrenergic responses to bioactive amines.
amitriptyline : An organic tricyclic compound that is 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d][7]annulene substituted by a 3-(dimethylamino)propylidene group at position 5.

Cognition Disorders: Disorders characterized by disturbances in mental processes related to learning, thinking, reasoning, and judgment.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"There were 1948 treatment histories for modafinil and 1394 treatment reports for amitriptyline reported across five PatientsLikeMe communities (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, mood conditions, fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)."3.77Patient-reported outcomes as a source of evidence in off-label prescribing: analysis of data from PatientsLikeMe. ( Frost, J; Heywood, J; Okun, S; Vaughan, T; Wicks, P, 2011)
"Amitriptyline treatment also caused a significant potentiation of non-toxic Aβ monomer with a concomitant decrease in cytotoxic dimer Aβ load, compared to vehicle-treated 3×TgAD controls."1.37Amitriptyline-mediated cognitive enhancement in aged 3×Tg Alzheimer's disease mice is associated with neurogenesis and neurotrophic activity. ( Becker, KG; Caroll, J; Chadwick, W; Lehrmann, E; Martin, B; Maudsley, S; Mitchell, N; Park, SS; Wang, L; Wood, WH; Zhang, Y; Zhou, Y, 2011)
"However, whether neuropathic pain can induce cognition dysfunction remains uncertain."1.36Amitriptyline rather than lornoxicam ameliorates neuropathic pain-induced deficits in abilities of spatial learning and memory. ( Hu, Y; Li, W; Wang, Y; Yang, J, 2010)
" There is also a fairly broad consensus that gabapentin is safe and well tolerated, but the side-effect profile of gabapentin has not been adequately assessed in pain populations."1.33Adverse effects of gabapentin and lack of anti-allodynic efficacy of amitriptyline in the streptozotocin model of painful diabetic neuropathy.
