aminolevulinic acid and Dermatitis, Contact, Phototoxic

aminolevulinic acid has been researched along with Dermatitis, Contact, Phototoxic in 18 studies

Aminolevulinic Acid: A compound produced from succinyl-CoA and GLYCINE as an intermediate in heme synthesis. It is used as a PHOTOCHEMOTHERAPY for actinic KERATOSIS.
5-aminolevulinic acid : The simplest delta-amino acid in which the hydrogens at the gamma position are replaced by an oxo group. It is metabolised to protoporphyrin IX, a photoactive compound which accumulates in the skin. Used (in the form of the hydrochloride salt)in combination with blue light illumination for the treatment of minimally to moderately thick actinic keratosis of the face or scalp.

Research Excerpts

"On 21 patients, skin phototoxicity was determined prior to as well as 4, 8 and 28 h after intravesical instillation of a 3% ALA solution by exposing small skin areas to a progressively graded series of defined UVA-light doses (n = 9; 5-80 J/cm(2))."5.31No generalized skin phototoxicity after intravesical application of 5-aminolevulinic acid for fluorescence diagnosis of superficial bladder cancer. ( Filbeck, T; Karrer, S; Pichlmeier, U; Rössler, W; Szeimies, RM; Wieland, WF; Wimmershoff, MB, 2000)
"To verify if photodynamic therapy (PDT) could overcome multidrug resistance (MDR) when it it applied to eradicate minimal residual disease in patients with leukemia, we investigated the fluorescence kinetics of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) and the effect of subsequent photodynamic therapy on MDR leukemia cells, which express P-glycoprotein (P-gp), as well as on their parent cells."3.715-Aminolaevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy in multidrug resistant leukemia cells. ( Hashimoto, K; Li, W; Ohnishi, K; Ohno, R; Yamada, I; Zhang, WJ, 2001)
"Improvement regarding dysphagia, stenosis diameter, and tumor length could be obtained in both treatment arms with a significant difference in favour of the Photosan-group, P = 0."2.70Does new photosensitizer improve photodynamic therapy in advanced esophageal carcinoma? ( Maier, A; Matzi, V; Pinter, H; Rehak, P; Smolle-Jüttner, FM; Tomaselli, F, 2001)

"Assessment of phototoxicity of PDT using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay showed that PDT was effective in NB4, NB4/MDR, NOMO-1 and NOMO-1/ADR cells, which accumulated high levels of PpIX, but not effective in K562 and K562/ADR cell lines, which accumulated relatively low levels of PpIX."1.315-Aminolaevulinic acid-mediated photodynamic therapy in multidrug resistant leukemia cells.
