Oncocytic adenocarcinoma of the ovary.
Virchows Archiv : an international journal of pathology, 1996, Volume: 429, Issue:2-3

A rare case of ovarian adenocarcinoma with extensive oncocytic differentiation is presented. Light and electron microscopy examination and a specific stain for mitochondria (chromotrope-alcian blue) confirmed the diagnosis. The tumour cells revealed abundant granular and eosinophilic cytoplasm containing a large number of mitochondria. The tumour had a malignant infiltrative pattern and cellular atypia.

Immunohistochemical characterization of extracellular matrix components of yolk sac tumors.
Virchows Archiv. B, Cell pathology including molecular pathology, 1990, Volume: 58, Issue:4

Proteoglycans (PGs) were isolated from yolk sac tumor and chondroitin sulfate large PG (core molecule with a molecular weight congruent to 200,000) and small PG (core molecule with a molecular weight congruent to 50,000) were detected. Immunohistochemical localization of PGs in three yolk sac tumors was investigated using monoclonal antibodies raised against both small and large PGs, which were purified from human ovarian fibroma capsule and a yolk sac tumor, respectively. The localization of large PG was observed to be distinct from that of small PG. A markedly positive reaction for antibody against large PG was observed in myxomatous areas, perivascular and perivesicular portions; hyaline globules were the most intensely reactive. In the areas showing a polyvesicular vitelline tumor pattern, the compact connective tissue stroma consisted of small PGs. It is conceivable that large PGs are synthesized by immature mesenchymal cells and also by epithelial-like cells as a basement membrane component, whereas small PGs are synthesized by mature fibroblastic cells synthesizing collagen. Immunohistochemical localization of other extracellular matrix components (laminin, fibronectin, type I-IV collagen) was also studied in relation to PG localization.

Mucosubstances in classification of serous and mucinous ovarian tumors: a morphometrical study.
European journal of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive biology, 1986, Volume: 22, Issue:3

108 serous and 106 mucinous ovarian cystadenomas of varying malignancy were studied with the saliva-periodic acid-Schiff (SPAS) reaction and with the Alcian blue (AB) pH 2.7 method, which stain neutral and acid mucosubstances, respectively. Positively stained mucin was quantitated morphometrically and the measured parameters were tested by discriminant analysis. As expected, the mucinous tumors were more positive for mucin than the serous ones. Also the borderline tumors contained more mucin than their benign or malignant counterparts. The best discriminating capacity for mucin was obtained in serous tumors with the AB stain and in mucinous tumors with the SPAS reaction. The ratio of neutral to acid mucosubstances decreased in mucinous cystadenomas with increasing malignancy.
