5-hydroxytryptophan and Ataxia

5-hydroxytryptophan has been researched along with Ataxia in 4 studies

5-Hydroxytryptophan: The immediate precursor in the biosynthesis of SEROTONIN from tryptophan. It is used as an antiepileptic and antidepressant.
5-hydroxytryptophan : A tryptophan derivative that is tryptophan substituted by a hydroxy group at position 5.

Ataxia: Impairment of the ability to perform smoothly coordinated voluntary movements. This condition may affect the limbs, trunk, eyes, pharynx, larynx, and other structures. Ataxia may result from impaired sensory or motor function. Sensory ataxia may result from posterior column injury or PERIPHERAL NERVE DISEASES. Motor ataxia may be associated with CEREBELLAR DISEASES; CEREBRAL CORTEX diseases; THALAMIC DISEASES; BASAL GANGLIA DISEASES; injury to the RED NUCLEUS; and other conditions.

Research Excerpts

ExcerptRelevanceReference
"To study the role of serotonin in the ataxia of progressive myoclonus epilepsy, eight patients received oral 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan (L-5-HTP) or placebo plus carbidopa for 1 month in a controlled, double-blinded, dose-ranging, cross-over, add-on study."2.68A controlled trial of 5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan for ataxia in progressive myoclonus epilepsy.
