3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and Hepatic Encephalopathy

3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid has been researched along with Hepatic Encephalopathy in 4 studies

3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic Acid: A deaminated metabolite of LEVODOPA.
(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid : A dihydroxyphenylacetic acid having the two hydroxy substituents located at the 3- and 4-positions. It is a metabolite of dopamine.
dihydroxyphenylacetic acid : A dihydroxy monocarboxylic acid consisting of phenylacetic acid having two phenolic hydroxy substituents.

Hepatic Encephalopathy: A syndrome characterized by central nervous system dysfunction in association with LIVER FAILURE, including portal-systemic shunts. Clinical features include lethargy and CONFUSION (frequently progressing to COMA); ASTERIXIS; NYSTAGMUS, PATHOLOGIC; brisk oculovestibular reflexes; decorticate and decerebrate posturing; MUSCLE SPASTICITY; and bilateral extensor plantar reflexes (see REFLEX, BABINSKI). ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY may demonstrate triphasic waves. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1117-20; Plum & Posner, Diagnosis of Stupor and Coma, 3rd ed, p222-5)

"Intracerebral microdialysis was applied to monitor the neocortical extracellular levels of the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, the neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA), and serotonin (5-HT), and the metabolites 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) in rats with various forms of experimental hepatic encephalopathy (HE)."3.69Neocortical dialysate monoamines of rats after acute, subacute, and chronic liver shunt. "Acute hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is associated with disturbances in motor functions, but the underlying mechanisms remain obscure."1.30N-methyl-D-aspartate-evoked changes in the striatal extracellular levels of dopamine and its metabolites in vivo in rats with acute hepatic encephalopathy.
