Nuclear medicine in oral and maxillofacial diagnosis: a review for the practicing dental professional.
The journal of contemporary dental practice, 2004, Feb-15, Volume: 5, Issue:1

Nuclear medicine studies often play a significant role in the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases. While not commonly used in everyday dental practice, the dental provider should have a conversational knowledge of these imaging modalities and understand the indications and limitations of these studies. The purpose of this review is to discuss the nuclear medicine studies that have applications in the head and neck region as well as their indications, limitations, and diagnostic conclusions that can be drawn from these studies.

Development of radiodetection systems towards miniaturised quality control of PET and SPECT radiopharmaceuticals.
    Lab on a chip, 2016, 04-26, Volume: 16, Issue:9

The ability to detect radiation in microfluidic devices is important for the on-chip analysis of radiopharmaceuticals, but previously reported systems have largely suffered from various limitations including cost, complexity of fabrication, and insufficient sensitivity and/or speed. Here, we present the use of sensitive, low cost, small-sized, commercially available silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for the detection of radioactivity inside microfluidic channels fabricated from a range of conventional microfluidic chip substrates. We demonstrate the effects of chip material and thickness on the detection of the positron-emitting isotope, [(18)F]fluoride, and find that, while the SiPMs are light sensors, they are able to detect radiation even through opaque chip materials via direct positron and gamma (γ) ray interaction. Finally, we employed the SiPM platform for analysis of the PET (positron emission tomography) radiotracers 2-[(18)F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) and [(68)Ga]gallium-citrate, and highlight the ability to detect the γ ray emitting SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) radiotracer, [(99m)Tc]pertechnetate.

Scintigraphic findings of MALT lymphoma of the thyroid.
Annals of nuclear medicine, 2002, Volume: 16, Issue:4

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma has been established as a distinct entity among non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and the most common primary site is the stomach. We describe scintigraphic findings in a patient with MALT lymphoma of the thyroid. A 71-year-old woman with Hashimoto's thyroiditis suffered from rapid cervical swelling, and ultrasonography and CT revealed a thyroid nodule. The nodule showed accumulation of 99mTc pertechnetate comparable to the surrounding thyroid tissue, mimicking a benign nodule. Both 67Ga and 201Tl imaging visualized the lesion as an increased uptake area. After radiotherapy, abnormally increased uptake disappeared on 67Ga images, which predicted a favorable outcome. MALT lymphoma of the thyroid may be visualized as a warm nodule on 99mTc pertechnetate scintigraphy.

[67 Ga-citrate scintigraphy as a determiner in the diagnosis of a subacute thyroiditis].
Revista espanola de medicina nuclear, 2001, Volume: 20, Issue:1

We present the case of a 41-year-old man admitted to the hospital with fever and toxic syndrome possibly having an oncological or infectious origin. A whole body scan with 67Ga-citrate showed an intense and diffuse radiotracer accumulation in the thyroid gland. The patient was re-evaluated and studied with other diagnostic tests including a thyroid 99mTc-pertechnetate scintigraphy and a thyroidal radioiodine uptake. A correct final diagnosis of painless subacute thyroiditis was made.
