Melittin had twice the toxicity of crude venom, but only 3% that of chlorpyriphos. Melittin significantly reduced growth rate, diet consumption and food utilization efficiencies of fourth instar larvae. Bee venom and insecticides reduced these parameters to a lesser extent.
