Azinomycin A and B arise through bifurcation of the biosynthetic pathway and competition between metabolic substrates. The availability of the biosynthetic precursors in vivo, aminoacetone for azinomycin A and threonine for azinomycin B, controls the overall ratio of azinomycin A to B produced.
