Caffeoyl triterpenes from pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) fruit peels and their antioxidative activities against oxidation of rat blood plasma.
Six triterpenes, including three caffeoyl triterpenes, were purified and isolated from pear fruit ( Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai cv. Chuwhangbae) peel extracts using various column chromatography techniques with a guided 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay. The isolated compounds were identified as betulinic aldehyde (1), lupeol (2), betulinic acid (3), 3-O-cis-caffeoylbetulinic acid (4), 3-O-trans-caffeoylbetulinic acid (5), and 3-O-trans-caffeoyloleanolic acid (6) on the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Four compounds (1, 4-6) were identified from Asian pear fruit for the first time. In addition, compounds 4-6, containing a caffeic acid moiety, showed higher DPPH radical-scavenging and suppression effects against copper ion-induced oxidation of rat blood plasma than other compounds without a caffeic acid moiety. Chemical constituents and allelopathic and antioxidant activities of Alchorneopsis floribunda Müll. Arg. (Euphorbiaceae).
Chemical investigation of extracts from the stems and leaves of Alchorneopsis floribunda Müll. Arg., collected in the Amazon region, was performed. The main isolated compounds were triterpenes (α-amyrin, β-amyrin, lupeol, betulin, betulinic acid, uvaol, erythrodiol and oleanolic acid) and phenolic acid derivatives from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (gallic and protocatechuic acids and isocorilagin). In the germination assays, high inhibitory allelopathic effects of the extracts and isocorilagin were observed and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of isocorilagin was higher than those of the standards used (Trolox and butylated hydroxyanisole). This is the first chemical study of the genus Alchorneopsis (Euphorbiaceae). Topics: Antioxidants; Biphenyl Compounds; Euphorbiaceae; Oleanolic Acid; Phenols; Picrates; Terpenes; Triterpenes | 2013 |
Chemical constituents of Caesalpinia decapetala (Roth) Alston.
The current study targets the chemical constituents of Caesalpinia decapetala (Roth) Alston and investigates the bioactivities of the isolated compounds. Fourteen known compounds were isolated using column chromatography, and structural identification was performed by physical and spectral analyses. The biological activities of the compounds were also evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 2,2-diphenlyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Emodin (6), baicalein (9), and apigenin (12) displayed antitumor activities against the MGC-803 cell line, while quercetin (2), rutin (5), baicalein (9), and epicatechin (13) showed stronger DPPH scavenging activities compared with ascorbic acid. Andrographolide (1), quercetin (2), bergenin (4), rutin (5), emodin (6), betulin (7), baicalein (9), polydatin (10), salicin (11), and apigenin (12), were obtained from C. decapetala (Roth) Alston for the first time. Extraction of betulin, trimyristin, eugenol and carnosic acid using water-organic solvent mixtures.
A solvent system consisting of ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and water, in the volume ratio of 4.5:4.5:1, was developed and used to extract, at room temperature, betulin from white birch bark and antioxidants from spices (rosemary, thyme, sage, and oregano) and white oak chips. In addition, under reflux conditions, trimyristin was extracted from nutmeg using the same solvent system, and eugenol from olives was extracted using a mixture of salt water and ethyl acetate. The protocol demonstrates the use of water in organic solvents to extract natural products from plants. Measurement of the free-radical scavenging activity using by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) indicated that the extraction of plant material using ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol and water (4.5:4.5:1, v/v/v) was exhaustive when carried out at room temperature for 96 h.
