Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

Viloxazine hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant that was initially marketed for the treatment of depression. However, it has been largely replaced by newer antidepressants with a better safety profile. It acts as a noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, increasing levels of noradrenaline in the brain. Its synthesis involves a multi-step process that starts with the reaction of 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzophenone with 2-amino-5-chlorobenzophenone. The resulting compound is then reduced to the corresponding amine and reacted with 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzophenone. The final product is then converted to the hydrochloride salt. Viloxazine hydrochloride was studied extensively in the 1970s and 1980s, but its use declined due to concerns about its side effects, including sedation, dry mouth, and constipation. It is still being studied for its potential therapeutic effects in other conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). '
