Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

Deuteroporphyrin-IX is a porphyrin derivative that is structurally similar to protoporphyrin-IX, but lacks the vinyl groups at positions 2 and 4. It is often found in the heme biosynthesis pathway as an intermediate in the formation of protoporphyrin-IX. Deuteroporphyrin-IX is also a key component of the prosthetic group of some hemoproteins, such as cytochrome c. Deuteroporphyrin-IX can be synthesized chemically or enzymatically. It can be used to study the mechanism of heme synthesis and the role of porphyrins in biological processes. Researchers have studied deuteroporphyrin-IX in relation to its potential use in photodynamic therapy for cancer treatment. It exhibits fluorescence properties, which can be exploited for diagnostic purposes and biological imaging. '
