Description Research Excerpts Clinical Trials Roles Classes Pathways Study Profile Bioassays Related Drugs Related Conditions Protein Interactions Research Growth Market Indicators

Celiprolol hydrochloride is a β1-selective adrenergic receptor antagonist, also known as a beta blocker, used primarily for the treatment of hypertension. It is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, with the S-enantiomer being the more potent. Celiprolol hydrochloride has been shown to reduce blood pressure by inhibiting the effects of norepinephrine and epinephrine on the heart. The mechanism of action is believed to involve blocking the binding of these neurotransmitters to β1-adrenergic receptors on the surface of cardiac myocytes. This leads to a decrease in heart rate, contractility, and blood pressure. Celiprolol hydrochloride also has antioxidant properties, which may contribute to its cardioprotective effects. It is being studied for its potential to prevent or treat other cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and arrhythmias. The compound's synthesis involves several steps, starting with the reaction of 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde with 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline. The resulting product is then reduced to the corresponding amine, and this amine is then reacted with 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The final step involves the reaction of this product with hydrochloric acid to form the hydrochloride salt.'
