benzo(a)pyrene-7,8,9,10-tetrol
Description
Benzo(a)pyrene-7,8,9,10-tetrol (BaP-tetrol) is a major metabolite of the potent carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) found in environmental pollutants such as cigarette smoke and coal tar. BaP-tetrol is formed in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes and is further metabolized by detoxification enzymes. BaP-tetrol is a reactive electrophile that can bind to DNA and other cellular macromolecules, leading to DNA damage and mutations. It has been implicated in the development of cancer, particularly lung cancer. BaP-tetrol is also a potent inducer of oxidative stress, which can contribute to cell death and inflammation. The study of BaP-tetrol is important for understanding the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and for developing strategies to prevent and treat cancer. Its role as a biomarker for exposure to PAHs has been explored, with its presence in biological samples indicating exposure to BaP and potentially other PAHs.'
