Description

4-methylumbelliferyl-galactopyranoside is a fluorescent substrate for β-galactosidase, an enzyme that hydrolyzes lactose. It is commonly used in assays to measure β-galactosidase activity in biological samples. This compound is synthesized by reacting 4-methylumbelliferone with galactose. When β-galactosidase hydrolyzes 4-methylumbelliferyl-galactopyranoside, it releases 4-methylumbelliferone, which fluoresces under UV light. This fluorescence can be quantified to determine the amount of β-galactosidase present in the sample. This substrate is widely used in research to study the activity and function of β-galactosidase in various biological systems, including bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells. The compound has also been used in the development of diagnostic kits for the detection of lactose intolerance and other β-galactosidase-related disorders.'
