Description

2-Acetylthiophene is a heterocyclic compound with the molecular formula C6H6OS. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. 2-Acetylthiophene is synthesized via the Friedel-Crafts acylation of thiophene with acetyl chloride in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst such as aluminum chloride. This compound is used as a starting material in the synthesis of various pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. It is also studied as a potential antimicrobial agent and is used in research concerning the synthesis of new organic materials. 2-Acetylthiophene is also used in the synthesis of various polymers, dyes, and fragrances.'
