Description

This compound is a fluorogenic substrate for sialidases, which are enzymes that cleave sialic acid residues from glycoconjugates. It is widely used in research to measure sialidase activity in various biological samples, including serum, tissue extracts, and cultured cells. The compound is synthesized by coupling 4-methylumbelliferone with N-acetylneuraminic acid. The hydrolysis of the substrate by sialidase releases the highly fluorescent 4-methylumbelliferone, which can be readily detected and quantified using a fluorometer. This makes it a sensitive and reliable method for studying sialidase activity and its regulation. Sialidases play crucial roles in various biological processes, including cell adhesion, signal transduction, and immune responses. Studies using 2'-(4-methylumbelliferyl)-alpha-d-n-acetylneuraminic acid have provided valuable insights into the function and regulation of sialidases, as well as their involvement in diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.'
