Description

1-hydroxy-3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) is a potent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is commonly used in research as a model compound for studying the carcinogenic effects of PAHs. It is a potent inducer of cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), a key enzyme involved in the metabolism of PAHs and other xenobiotics. 3-MC is also a potent mutagen and has been shown to induce tumors in a variety of animal models. It is often used in studies investigating the mechanisms of PAH-induced carcinogenesis, as well as the development of new strategies for preventing or treating PAH-related cancers. 3-MC is synthesized from a precursor called 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) by enzymatic hydroxylation. 3-MC is produced by the incomplete combustion of organic matter, such as coal, wood, and tobacco. It is also found in contaminated soil and water. 3-MC can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact.'
